I'm worried because my grandma has diabetes.
Yes,definitely there are a number of factors that predispose to the emergence of diabetes. in the first place should be hereditary predisposition. Virtually all experts agree that the risk of falling ill diabetics increases, if in your family who is ill or sick diabetes – one of your parents, brother or sister. however, different sources are given different numbers that determine the likelihood of disease. There are observations that diabetes type one is inherited with a probability of 3-7% of the mothers and 10% probability of the father. if both parents are ill, the risk of disease increases by several times and up to 70%. Type two diabetes is inherited with a probability of 80% of both the maternal and paternal lines, as if diabetics are sick both parents, the likelihood of its manifestation in children is approaching 100%. According to other sources, no particular differences in the likelihood of diabetes first and second type. It is believed that if the pain in your diabetic father or mother, then the probability that you are too sick to be about 30%. if both parents are sick, then your chance of disease is about 60%.
You can refer here for more info:
Just because the disease is in your genes, does NOT mean you will DEFINITELY get it. same with if your family has no history at all, you can still get it. (That happened with me)
Scientists are still unsure about causes or cures. some people think it could be the ever changing environment triggering the disease and dis-function of the pancreas.
Best thing to do is eat healthy, exercise regularly and go to your GP and get a test done if you're worried.
I believe a lot of type 1 diabetes is caused by viral infections. Genes may not be involved at all. I've talked to a lot of type 1 diabetics either IRL or online. Every single type 1 diabetic had a viral infection of some type in the months before they were diagnosed as a type 1 diabetic.
The prevailing medical paradigm that type 1 diabetes is an auto- immune disease where insulin producing beta cells are constantly attacked throughout a life time is due for a paradigm shift. I've been a type 1 diabetic for 53 years, 9 months and counting, and I'm healthier than a lot of my similarly aged friends and acquaintances. my prescriptions are for two high blood pressure drugs. I buy my insulin OTC. I haven't had a flu shot since 2004, and the last time I had a cold with a fever was so long ago that I've forgotten the year, 1998 I think. Does that sound like my immune system is seriously compromised by an auto-immune disease?
What causes diabetes 1 besides genes? If you have the genes, does it definitely mean you will get diabetes?

My husband has been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes and High Cholesterol. In supporting his "new" Diabetic diet, I have opted to be on a Diabetic Diet with him. Also, my daughter is 10, and she is very thin, I was having her do this diet as well, but allow her to eat "junk" food on occasion. is it nutritionally safe for my child to do a no Sugar/Low fat diet as well?
you should probably ask a doctor not yahoo users – this is a serious question
Yes. no sugar diets are beneficial to growing bodies. this is how all people should eat no sugar/low fat diets.
It is a proven fact that the diabetic diet is the healthiest diet for anyone. go for it, and be healthy! High sugar/high fat is not healthy for anyone, including children. Lots of foods provide their own sugars, such as fruit and milk.
I'd ask your daughter's pediatrician how to monitor her for signs of malnutrition.
Most doctors recommend South beach phase 2 and 3 for diabetics. it is a healthy diet that is safe for most age groups. it promotes healthy eating. Talk to your daughters pediatrician as he or she would be able to better advise you. now with that said, teaching her dietary habits now that will last her into adult hood is a great thing as you are helping to prevent your daughter from becoming a product of her diet and family genes (diabetes type 1 and 2 tend to have strong links to family genes if mom or dad has it good chance she is at risk.
I agree with Cece. one concern, according to one book I read, the body cannot tell the difference between sugar substitutes and sugar. In other words, insulin reacts to all sweets like it reacts to sugar. Also some sugar substitutes promote diarrhea.
Your daughter should do just find on your diet. she may need larger portions because she is growing.
Yes, you will be better off if you do. at least you will be preventing yourself from becoming diabetic.
A good diabetic diet is nothing but following the food pyramid. That's the diet any doctor or dietitian would have a non-diabetic follow. you have to follow the diet and it's not easy until you get used to it. I'm diabetic and it's easier for me to follow because if I don't I don't feel good. In the future a diabetic will have many problems with eyes, feet, kidneys, heart and early death if they don't follow the diet and control their blood sugars.
To add to what was said above..
A Diabetic diet (like south beach and actkins) includes a low carbohydrate meals. Carbohydrates expecially white bread, potato, white rice, pasta are starches that when they are metabolized becomes pure sugar (glucose). So when you say low sugar/low fat, you have to include low carb diet.
In general whole grains are starches that are not processed like brown rice and whole grain breads are definately healthier than processed stuff. For you 10 yr/old daughter, staying away from refined sugars and processed starched is very healthy.
A diabetic diet is actually a good diet for anyone. Balance is very important and keeping your blood sugar from having peaks and valleys is beneficial for weight control, mood swings, hormonal problems and many other things as well as for diabetes. your daughter should be just fine, but ensure that she is getting adequate portions. Also children tend to need a little more fat in their diet than adults…try giving her some peanut butter once in a while.
Yes, it is actually a very healthy diet. your daughter should be perfectly fine. you can always fix some extra carbs (like a bowl of pasta etc.) for her.
The lean meat and fresh veggies that make up a lot of the perfect diabetic diet will be very healthy for her.
Actually a diabetic diet is a very good diet for anyone. if you compare weight watchers and the ADA diet, they are very similar. good luck to you and your family.
The diabetic diet enforces discipline on your eating habits. In that way it is good for non-diabetics too. but you should fulfil or take care of the total calories' requirement according to your daily routine activities.
The "Diabetic Diet" is the safest and most nutritional diet out there because it is aimed at keeping glucose levels even. A diabetic diet should be high in vegetables where we get most of our vitamins. this diet is safe for anyone.
I'm sure it's much healthier than the average American diet. It just cuts down all the junk we eat.
If you're concerned, take a copy of your eating plan to the pediatrician's office with you. They may have you add more olive oil or fruit to it.
I'd keep her away from the artificial sweeteners, but really your husband should avoid those to the best of his ability as well. They're not good for his kidneys. We use stevia and we drink water. Much healthier than diet sodas.
There is no such thing as a "diabetic diet". There are simply diets which are appropriate or inappropriate to a person's individual needs.
I have had Type 1 diabetes for years. my diet would not be considered low sugar, or more accurately low carbohydrate; however, I exercise for 1 – 2 hours a day, and generally lead an active lifestyle. as such, the desease is perfectly under control.
The point is that diabetes or no diabetes, each member of your family should be eating what their individual body needs.
Is it safe for someone whom does not have Diabetes to eat a Diabetic Diet?

I am a diabetic, and I use food and exercise to lower my blood sugar. I would like to lower it more through food with a moderate amount of exercise. Right now I have to exercise excessively. But, I have heard a certain diet could really help.
try garlic… try to reasearch the health benefit of this herb. it is consider as a herbal medicine
Some of those others answers………. . there is no food to help lower any sugar and there are NO herb drugs either. The main thing you will want to do is keep track of your sugars so you know where you are at, choose the proper foods and exercise. take any meds you are on at the sametime, daily.
There is no certain diet for a diabetic because all diabetics are different. what works for one may not work for the other. Eating is done in moderation as well. If you overeat, naturally your sugar will go up no matter what it is that you eat. I am not on any special diet. I can eat anything I want. It's so different nowadays as from 47 years ago! what are your sugars running? I understand that if your sugar is high to begin with, do not exercise as it will only raise it more. That has never happened to me but then again everyone is different. what type are you? Me, type 1.
Read some useful tips on diabetes and more on this site to help you with it
To lower blood sugar, you will want to control the carbohydrates that you eat. also, if you have extra weight, you will want to lose it. I am Type 2 Diabetic. I started a weight loss system called Stack Body Tune Up on July 15, 2006. my blood sugar was 250. After 24 days, my blood sugar came into control and has been in control since.
If I can be of further assistance, let me know.

Good complex carbs will help your blood sugars stay at a good level. As will taking a supplement with cinnamon in it. Cinnamon has been proven to help your body use synthetic insulin better and to keep it level
Go to the website for the ADA. This is the American Diabetes Association and all diabetics should be familiar with it. It has complete information on what you seek to know.
For the wit who suggested orange juice, etc., prune juice has more grams of sugar than orange juice. Suggest that next time and kill two birds with one stone.
U should eat stuff that are sour.. or even drink the juice of Bitter Melon on an empty stomach.. but remember u don't want it to get too low.. For sour.. try Tamarind.. u can find it at any indian grocery.. but remember too much is not good.. not at all
In order to keep your blood sugar level under control, you need not to panic to visit a doctor. there are no Allopathic medicines available in the market that will cure the diabetic conditions of humans but they will control the disorder up to certain levels. The disease is developed due to eating disorders and hereditary. in the first place, I have never accepted diabetes as disease but considered it to be a disorder. The medicine is readily available at home in the form of natural products and you need not to go to market to purchase expensive medicines. to keep the sugar level under control, follow my suggestions and see the difference. Drink the juice of one bitter gourd, one cucumber and one tomato on empty stomach in the morning on a regular basis (drink this juice twice a day if you are insulin dependent) until you start feeling relief and your blood sugar level starts decreasing and continue further for a very long time until your sugar level reaches border line. The sugar level will certainly come down. Eat plenty of cucumber before meal to quench your thrust and to fill your empty stomach. Cucumbers are considered and proved to be very good for diabetic patients. Diabetic patients are always hungry to eat but can not eat all. Avoid banana, mango, custard apple and sweets like ice cream, pastry and cold drinks totally. If you are insulin dependent, even eating rice would be very harmful. You can eat fruits like guava, pineapple, pomegranate, papaya, muskmelon and watermelon. Taking one tea spoon Fenugreek powder and quarter tea spoon cinnamon powder on empty stomach before breakfast daily would be beneficial to diabetic patients. Regular brisk walking for one hour daily would be the best ideal medicine for diabetic patients. Cut down on non-vegetarian, fast, spicy and oily food, aerated cold drinks and foods rich in calories. Correct constipation. Avoid alcohol and tobacco also. Tea and coffee are also bad for health because they Caffeine promote calcium excretion from the body and results in calcium loss from the bones. Drink plenty of water daily. take one tablet of Diabecon (By Himalaya an Herbal Health Care Company in India) twice a day if available in your country, as a maintenance dose. take care and be in good health.
First of all you need to cut out high sugar foods and high fat foods….also do not drink considering that alcohol contains a lot of sugars….You need to eat more natural complex carbohydrates like pasta, rice, bread, and potatoes which cause sugar to stay at more consitent levels….a great site to learn more about things you can eat and should not eat is
http://www.healthgoods.com/Education/Nut…
It also expalins more of he reasons why…
Look into the South Beach Diet. It will steer you into the right direction of good carbs and good fats and protein. there are no foods that really lower your blood sugar, but lots that won't cause as a high a rise.
look up the glycemic index and eat food that have a low GI value. there have been some studies on certain herbs that can help the body maintain blood sugar but i don't have my books on me right now (I'm at work) and would hate to spout out the wrong ones.. but any natural foods store will probably have someone who can help you out with that.

I have had type 1 diabetes for almost 4 years and they are mostly good, but not all the time. im just worried, because i feel like im only going to live to be 60…
does anyone know how long type 1s last?
This depends on a lot of factors. However, I've known quite a number of type-1 diabetics in their 70's.
To live longer:
– Follow a diet designed for diabetics. Vary from it cautiously and infrequently.
– Monitor your glucose properly and use your medication to keep your A1c within the normal range.
– Learn about the risks of your disease, and how to recognize early symptoms of diabetic complications.
– Have your A1c and other vitals monitored regularly, and take appropriate action when they are not in the desired range.
Gerry S gave good advice. your life expectancy can be directly related to your control of the diabetes and your diet. my mom is 85 and has taken insulin since she was 10 years old and is in relatively good health except for some neuropathy in her feet. she has always kept very strict control of her diet, and to this day will not eat sweets like cake, candy, pie etc.
Does anyone know the average age at which a type 1 diabetic will live to be?

I'm doing some research for something about diabetes type one, and i was wondeing what are the things that can happen, and does it happen if you are using inselin and eating right? If you have any info or web sites that i can check out, please let me know. thanks!
well if they dont take care of their selves they can go blind . that is only one thing there are several things that can happen . good luck .
Damage to blood vessels can cause blindness, heart disease, loss of limbs, kidney failure, and many, many other problems.
Good diabetic management is crucial–but can be very hard to achieve. even the most compliant diabetics can experience severe sequelae of the disease.
my brother has type 1 and his doctor explained alot of serious risk and complications that could happen.he said the chances get smaller when you control it better, but one website i know has alot of info is — www.dlife.com
What can happen to someone with type one diabetes?

I heard it can cure type 1 and type 2 is it true?
Many raw fooders are former type 2 diabetics. I watched a DVD on it last year. But I have personally known a few. a raw food diet can turn turn type 2 diabetes around. I know of 2 cases of diabetes type 1, both had been newly diagnosed, who went on raw food diets and turned down insulin. they are still healthy today. the islets of langerhans in the pancreas stop functioning ( requiring a need for insulin) resulting in type 1 diabetes. perhaps because they were diagnosed early, they were able to turn around. Nurse (and Raw Fooder) Addison.
NOTHING will cure either type of diabetes!!! get over that thought and in a hurry! Eventually the scientists will find a cure, but I am afraid not in our lifetimes. Diabetes has been around and recognized since the ancient Greeks! Only recently have there been many improvements in treatment of either type. 1920s for insulin! and 1990s for glucometers.
Raw foods can sometimes help to control the glucose numbers better than cooked foods. But do you really want to limit yourself to only raw foods? I want my eggs cooked and my meats at least heated to medium rare!
There are no signs that indicated that raw food can cure diabetes. It is highly unlikely though.

What are your thoughts on the raw food diet and Diabetes?

I was wondering since the glycemic index diet controls the sugar in your body, would diabetic cooking be the same? the reason why I ask, is because it is not as easy to get g.i diet cookbooks, but diabetic cookbooks are really easy to get and I also have a few diabetic cookbooks already and wanted to know if they are the same, because I was thinking that they are similar diets.
They are not the same, but a low G.I. diet is excellent for anyone, including diabetics.
It stops sugar levels spiking and is very healthy.
It is worth the effort to find one.
Plenty of info on www
Unfortunately their not the same. many diabetic cookbooks or their recipes are not good for a diabetic. a glycemic index way of eating is one of the best. the best Glycemic Index on the web is :
http://www.mendosa.com/gilists.htm It contains a list of 2,480 foods and their index and loads.
So just use the Glycemic Index when you decide what recipes you want. Cross checking will let you know how great your Diabetic cookbook is.
Tin
Are glycemic index diet and diabetic diet the same?

(There are 3 types of diabetes.) I need to know for a science project. When I research it they just have the same recipes for all types.
No the diet is the same for both type 1 and tpye 2 diabetes. reduced carbs with more low glycaemic foods, reduced total fat and reduced saturated fat.
People with type 1 diabetes CANNOT produce insulin which brings the blood sugar down so just about everything they eat causes their blood sugar to rise. They have to inject insulin to compensate for the lack of it. The diet they should follow should be low fat and low carb and sugar. Basically they should follow a normal healthy diet. When insulin is administed because it was not natrually produced in the body in response to the foods we eat, sometimes to much insulin is given and the blood sugar is brought down to low. Low to the point the person can die which is why someone who uses insulin needs to have some sugar or sugar pills, candy on hand just in case the sugar drops really low.
Type 2 diabetics basically have a pancreas that has pooped out and cannot produce adequate amount of insulin to keep blood sugars within normal range. They also should follow a low fat, low carb diet but they don't have to worry so much about the sugar dropping really low because most type 2 diabetics take pills to control their condition which don't drop the sugar quite so much. If the pills aren't working well enough they also might need insulin.
Pretty much the diets are the same for both types.
Even people who have the same type of diabetes need individualized diet plans.
A two yr old with type 1 will have a greatly different diet plan than a 24 yr old with type 1 who is an olympic athlete.
They will both have separate plans than a 40 yr old with type 1 who is a house wife.
Everyone is different.
Do people with different types of diabetes need different types of diets?

I am doing two different kind of treats for my social club but some are requesting me to make something that people with diabetes can eat. What's is the best treat for Christmas that is easy to make and diabetes can eat?
Firstly, allow me to clarify that most foods end up in your body as glucose, and there is no way that your body will know if the glucose came from a chocolate bar, a watermelon slice or a bowl of rice.
That being said, diabetics need to control the amount of sugar in their bodies, and type 1 diabetics need to plan their meals around their insulin intake.
If I may suggest, preparing treats that do not contain refined sugar or processed flavor enhancers will be a good idea. you can certainly make use of natural fruits that contain lots of fiber that is beneficial not only to diabetics, but to people without diabetes too.
Fruit sugar can be helpful to diabetics because it can be used in exactly the same way as ordinary sugar but because it’s sweeter you need to use 33% less.
So, you can actually bake a cake but use fruit sugar instead of common, refined sugar. And don't forget to leave out anything sugary too, like icing and stuff. thus, you can use a little fruit sugar and enhance the flavor with other naturally sweet stuff with low glycemic index ie. berries or bananas or kiwi.
So, remember that essentially, the issue with diabetics is not the sugar content but the carbohydrate values. Sucrose and glucose, both found in common sugar, produce a rapid rise in blood sugar levels which gives rise to the need for insulin. this means diabetics need to carefully control the amount and types of sugar that they consume.
Fruit sugar does not cause this rapid rise in blood sugar levels because it is mainly metabolized within the liver. From there, having been used to form glucose, it is released slowly as and when the body needs energy.
Being a diabetic means taking things in moderation. Depending on how severe the case, some people can have a little sugar, but not too much. regarding what sweet treats you can get, you have two options: 1 go to the store and buy sugar free or no sugar added items. 2. you can make or bake something using Splenda. you can go online to the food network to get ideas. I do know that Splenda does have a small book (like the ones you find at the checkout stand at the grocery store) that has a lot of great ideas. I do not know where you live but Marie Calendar's have two no sugar added pies (apple and razzleberry). Sees Candies have a few dark chocolate and peanut brittle no sugar added items. Walgreens has about 12 different mainline no sugar added items like Hersheys, Reese's, York, Russell Stover & Werthers. you just have to ask at your bigger grocery chains. If they like jelly, you can go to the Knotts Berry Farm website and you can order surgar free or low sugar jelly. they have strawberry and boysenberry or blackberry, (never can remember ). Hope that helps!
For diet control and food to be taken by diabetics, you do not need to starve yourself because there are foods in abundance that you can take without spiking your blood sugar. a good way to choose food is to refer to the glycemic index of food which is graded on a scale 0-100.
This index is a measure of the rate at which a food releases glucose or sugar into your bloodstream. If you take food with a corresponding index up to 50, you blood sugar can be easily controlled. do not frequent intake of food with indices between 50 to 70. do not touch foods >70. here your main concern is on the type and quality of food, not the quantity. There are plenty of foods that are safe.
My best friend (Who's diabetic)
Says defiantly not those "diabetic chocolates" you can get in Thornton's and places
They are apparently worse for you.
But how about veggies with dips or make a fun sculpture out of food they can eat.
P.s Make it fun and colorful ! =)
don t take out carbs just don t have a lot. cookies are good and you can make them festive 2! angel food cake is good and only has bout 20 carbs it makes us feel bad when ppl try to help and get like carrots and stufff this happened to me my bf in 6th grade had a b-day and his mom made a cake and she said im sorry i should have bought some carrots. (*****) =D we can have sugar we just have to have insulin low carb stuuf are with fruits and kiquids they cancel the carbs out =D
Vegtable trays are good.
Sugar free candy and cookies
And if you make any dips try going for reduced fat mixes as diabetics tend to have to watch their fat intake as well.
Turkey – high protein, low fat, no sugar.
What is the best Christmas treats that diabetes people can eat?
