I have just been diagnosed with pre-diabetes, and I now have to watch my diet. Can you help me?

Written on August 4th, 2011 by larryno shouts

I was told that I have to watch my simple sugars, and have complex carbs. so what is good for me to eat, besides whole wheat?

Quiet is wrong. Starches are bad. Potato starch will spike your blood sugar than pure glucose will.

You want complex carbohydrates, NOT simple carbohyrdates like starch and sugar.

But here's the trick. if you mix sugar and simple carbs with foods that have lower glycemic indexes (they don't raise your blood sugar as fast), the two interact, so that your blood sugar doesn't go up as fast as you would expect.

Here is where fat and protein are your friend. Not only do they raise your blood sugar slowly, but they slow down the simple sugars that you might have mixed in with them.

here is your solution: http://www.treatingdiabetesnow.com/cookb…

Delicious Diabetic Recipes

Discover Over 500 tasty Diabetic Recipes, sure to please your taste buds and satisfy your diet restrictions!

"delicious Diabetic Recipes" gives you an awesome collection of over 500 recipes! You'll find recipes for things you may have thought you couldn't have any more, like Fudge, Cakes and Cookies. well the good news is you can still have all those things you just need some recipes that tell you how to make them-FREE!

For sure!! Eat according to the American Diabetes Associations recommended diabetes Food Pyramid which is merely smaller portions of what you have eaten up to now and you will be full fledged diabetic in less than a year!

Simple sugars separated from Complex Carbs is an oxymoron! Both raise glucose levels the same amount for the same length of time. the experts keep trying to convince us that complex carbs contain necessary fiber that at the same time slows absorbtion of the glucose, but I don't find that to be true at all, at least for me.

I eat by the South Beach Living phase 2 food plan and delete some of the foods anyway because they cause my glucose to spike too much. find these books at your local library, book stores, online book stores, etc. excellent menus and recipes in all of them for low carb living. I keep my grams of carb to under 100 per day.

I eat mostly chef salads with excellent tasty dressings, bacon and eggs, and rarely have any bread products!

not surprised!
get rid of the simple sugars completely.
any food with whole grains in it
veggies, fruits.
your pancrease that controls your blood sugars is losing its job, due to your bad eating habits
unless you want to be a diabetic for the rest of your life, straighten up
and start eating better.

Whole grains, cut back on fat, starches are good, like potatoes or yams. the main thing is moderation. Not too much of anything. you know the food pyramid and the portions that everyone learns as a kid? take a look at a modern one and keep yourself on that. you just have to avoid sweets, sugar in tee or coffee etc.etc. and you need to drink plenty of water, 2-3 liters a day and exercise

1) stop using unknown sources of info for your medical needs.
2) Contact a dietitian

Does anyone know of a website that lists the different kinds of foods a diabetic can eat?

Written on August 1st, 2011 by larry2 shouts

I don't want recipies, just a list of foods to choose from when I go shopping

Eating a lot of high GI foods can be detrimental to your health because it pushes your body to extremes. this is especially true if you are overweight and sedentary. Switching to eating mainly low GI carbs that slowly trickle glucose into your blood stream keeps your energy levels balanced and means you will feel fuller for longer between meals.
The types of food a diabetic needs

High Fibre foods – Sprouted legumes like channa and green gram and green vegetables.

High protein foods (unless specifically advised due to complications)- sprouted legumes and so on.

Starch – Even a diabetic needs carbohydrates for energy. It is a myth to believe wheat or ragi is good while rice is bad for a diabetic. all cereals contain 70% starch. The diabetic should limit the intake of starch to small portions.

Vegetables – these are very important. apart from tubers like potato, carrots and beets most other vegetables can be taken in big helpings. They provide nutrition also roughage. They supplement the volume you will have to cut down on cereal and make for fulfilling meals.

The foods that can be eaten in small portions

Starches – these are essential for the body. but when insulin is insufficient, there is a problem in reaching the energy from these foods to the cells. a diabetic can work on this type of food only in small quantities at a time.

Citrus fruits – once there is reasonable control over your blood sugar you can take citrus fruits like lime, orange and melons in small quantities. Apples and guavas can also be taken.

Veggies unlimited

The following vegetables can be taken in unlimited quantities:

Bean varieties like cluster beans, broad beans, beans.
Greens- Spinach and other greens, mint, coriander and curry leaves.
Leafy vegetables like cabbage and lettuce.
Common Indian vegetables like ladies finger, brinjal, chow chow, tomatoes, tindly ( Kovakkai) and capsicum.
Gourds like bitter gourd, snake gourd, ash gourd and bottle gourd (avoid pumpkin).
Among root vegetables you can take radish (white), onion, ginger and garlic.
While bananas should be avoided, banana stem and flower can be taken.
Banned foods

These are an absolute no-no:

Sweeteners – Sugar, honey and jaggery.
Nuts – Pista, badam and cashew etc.
Soft drinks and beverages – Fruit juices, drinks like Bournvita or Horlicks and tender coconut water.
Fruits – Banana, chickoo, mango, jackfruit or any other sweet fruits.
Tinned or preserved fruits: Dates, sultanas and so on.

Low GI diets help people lose and control weight
Low GI diets increase the body's sensitivity to insulin
Low GI carbs improve diabetes control
Low GI carbs reduce the risk of heart disease
Low GI carbs reduce blood cholesterol levels
Low GI carbs can help you manage the symptoms of PCOS
Low GI carbs reduce hunger and keep you fuller for longer
Low GI carbs prolong physical endurance
High GI carbs help re-fuel carbohydrate stores after exercise

How to Switch to a Low GI Diet
The basic technique for eating the low GI way is simply a "this for that" approach – ie, swapping high GI carbs for low GI carbs. You don't need to count numbers or do any sort of mental arithmetic to make sure you are eating a healthy, low GI diet.

Use breakfast cereals based on oats, barley and bran
Use breads with wholegrains, stone-ground flour, sour dough
Reduce the amount of potatoes you eat
Enjoy all other types of fruit and vegetables
Use Basmati or Doongara rice
Enjoy pasta, noodles, quinoa
Eat plenty of salad vegetables with a vinaigrette dressing .

Is type II diabetes reversable if your not massively over weight?

Written on July 28th, 2011 by larryno shouts

Is type II diabetes reversable if your not massively over weight (like over weight like 5 or 10 pounds over?

I thought it was my understanding that all types of diabetes are reversable, but a friend of mine who was recently diagnosed said her type II is not because she isn't massively over weight.

I would like to know who is correct and is it reversable?

Neither type of diabetes is at present reversible! It does not matter what the weight of the type 2 person is it is still not reversible.

It can be controlled with food planning, exercise and medications. It can be controlled to the point that the patient stays in the normal regions for a very long time, but takes constant vigilence over the food and exercising and watching the glucose numbers.

How can I control my diabetes?

Written on July 25th, 2011 by larryno shouts

Is there anything on the market yet to help control my type 2 diabetes without harsh drugs..?
Are there any foods that can help..?
I heard antichock was a very good food to help control this,is this a fact..??

Diabetes sucks. I think I may have it because I get light headed a lot during the day. I bought a home test and I am going to monitor myself.

the drugs may be a bit harsh but they do make life so very much easier to deal with! been on metformin for about 12 years now! just added insulins about 4 years ago.

You can go very very low carb food plan and quadruple your exercise regime and you may be able to put off taking the drugs for several years.

type 2 diabetes is unfortunately progressive. It progresses as it will with no reguard to how much you are fighting it. Very tight food plan, medications, heavy exercise 7 days a week don't always work to slow it down.

read this site first then go to the forum on the next site for food planning help as there are several people there who have successfully done only diet and exercise to control the glucose issues.

There's all kinds of info about various herbs and teas and cinnamon, and not artichokes too? It's easy enough to test if any of this stuff works by just checking your sugar on your glucometer.

Count carbs.
Eat 2-3 (women) carb choices per meal 3-4 (men).
Space out your carb choices out through the day, eat protein wioth each meal and snack.

Whole grains, whole fruits, no juice or sweet, sugary desserts.

Walk 30 minutes every day.
Exercise can control your blood sugar as much as medication for some people

There could be many reasons for having diabetes but turning your lifestyle into a healthy one can lower the blood glucose level. This would mean checking your diet, exercising regularly, etc. please click on the following link below for further information from an expert endocrinologist.

Traditional Chinese medicine addresses diabetes type 2 through tonic herbs, acupuncture, qi gong, and food therapy. There are many tonic herbs that can not only lower blood sugar and reverse insulin resistance, but heal the pancreas. Natural therapies such as tonic herbs work best when used early on; the chances of reversing pancreatic damage lessen with each passing year of diabetes. What causes people with Type 1 diabetes to get bad headaches and migraines?

Written on July 15th, 2011 by larryno shouts

My little brother has type 1 diabetes and was diagnosed with it at 12 months old and he sometimes get bad migraines. what causes migraines and bad headaches when you have type 1 diabetes?

He is 17 years old and is a big part of me. if something ever happened to him, damn I don't know what I'd do.

I have had type 1 diabetes for 15 yrs (i'm 24y/o) and i get headaches with high or low BGL's. I mean high, as in 16mmol and low being 3mmol.
With the high ones i get very thirsty but a headache is also the body saying i need water or energy (depending on BGL).
The high and low BGL's are hard on your body coz its trying to get itself back to "normal" and grabbing whatever it can. Water to get rid of the excess sugar or glucose to bring the low BGL back up. I end up with cramps when i have a low BGL.
I'm not sure if he is on one but i recommend investing in an insulin pump.
It was also suggested to me when i was diagnosed that when i have a high BGL to drink water as well as watch my BGL…or however your brother corrects his BGL as this helps the body get rid of the sugar without dehydrating the body

I have been type for 15 years and I usually get headaches when a low is coming. the headache is different from normal headaches being more severe and always results in a low. I have never had a migraine though, I think that's a separate issue.

Well i have had diabetes for 7 years and for me its either when my blood sugar goes really low o really high…being in the sun or running as well give me horrible headaches ever since i got diabetes… when your blood sugar goes high or low its really hard on your body and its tiring for your brain

I don't think the two are related. I'm type one for the past 14 years and never had a migraine. many people who have migraines are not diabetic. this question would be best answered by a doctor.

Why dont doctors taste urine anymore to check more diabetes mellitus?

Written on July 13th, 2011 by larryno shouts

i know that in ancient times, doctors used to taste a patients urine to determine whether its sweet or not. and if its sweet it meant that the patient had diabetes.. but why is the strongly discouraged in labs today? (the tasting of urine)

this is right and the reason is that when the glucose appear in your urine the diabete is already sever … Diabetes mean the glycemia higher than 1.26 g/l

That's so disgusting lol and not as accurate as a dip stick! xx

Because there's a simple blood test now?

Athletes foot or diabetes?

Written on July 13th, 2011 by larryno shouts

I've had this problem ever since I was a little boy but it has progressed. I am now 28 and I love scratching my toes because it feels so darn good. I'm starting to get small cuts on my feet from scratching so much. on some nights I will wake in the middle of the night and continue to scratch my toes. I do wear my shoes and socks all day and I always forget to dry my feet after a shower.

I heard on forums that it can be from diabetes. So I had blood test, AC1 5.0, FASTING GLUCOSE 86, RANDOM GLUCOSE later on during the day 2 hour later after a meal and it was 91. Doctor said there is NO EVIDENCE OF DIABETES and it's athletes foot.

Is this good ole athletes foot like I assume it is?

Most likely athletes foot. Your test results are normal for a healthy person (3.3 – 5.5 before meal that's in mol/l and in your measurements you need to multiply that by ~18).

Make sure you keep your feet clean and dry. also you might have dry skin and need to use some cream etc. though as your doctor said you might want to look into athletes foot first.

Also ignore those things about pre-diabetic. It's not like they know if you are one or not. they just send out random emails everywhere.
