Written on August 5th, 2011 by larryno shouts

my father recently suffered his 4th heart attack and has went through with the open heart durgery double bypass. in the meantime we have learned he is also a type II diabeteic. If anyone knows any reciepes or a great site to get them for all the issues listed above it would greatly be appreciated. I have tried the main site for heart disease and type II diabetes, I did find recipes but for each problem individually. I would love to help out my dad as much as possible since he is getting tired of eating the same things over and over. I need some creativity too if at all possible. Thank you for your help.

Don’t ignore diabetes

Written on July 31st, 2011 by larryno shouts

Special to The Vindicator

Because cancer is so closely associated with death, a diagnosis of the disease in a family member or friend is severely tragic news. but a diagnosis of diabetes is often not viewed as seriously.

That’s because the health consequences of this disease are not widely understood. but the truth is that diabetes is more deadly than many forms of cancer and becoming much more commonplace. if we want to stop losing our relatives and friends by the millions, we need to do a better job of educating and taking care of them.

While great strides have been made in the past 10 years in treating cancer and heart disease (traditionally the leading causes of death in the United States), resulting in lower mortality rates, the number of people afflicted with diabetes, or at risk for diabetes, has increased sharply.

Leading cause of death

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report that diabetes is the nation’s leading cause of death, with one in 10 American adults afflicted with the disease. as of January 2011, some 18.8 million children and adults in the U.S. were diagnosed with diabetes, with an estimated 7 million more undiagnosed and 79 million others considered prediabetic.

Last year, 1.9 million new cases of diabetes were diagnosed in people aged 20 and older, and the risks increase with age. Even children and teenagers are developing Type 2 diabetes, the most common form of the disease.

The number of diabetics could grow to one in three in the next 40 years, meaning that the number of Americans with the disease could triple by 2050, the CDC says. Today, diabetes is responsible for about $170 billion in health-care costs. the potential for increase is almost beyond comprehension.

Diabetes presents serious threats to health, including higher risk of heart attack, stroke, kidney failure and blindness, along with other complications. as a podiatric physician and surgeon, I know firsthand that one of the most feared complications is amputation of the toes, feet and lower legs. Both the CDC and the American Diabetes Association report that more than 60 percent of lower-limb amputations not resulting from a traumatic injury, such as a car crash, occur in people with diabetes.

These complications all add to the growing costs. despite improvements in care over the years, amputations of the toe, foot, and leg are still common. Many people with diabetes have artery disease, which reduces blood flow to the feet, and/or nerve disease, which limits feeling in the feet. These problems make it easy to get sores, ulcers or infections.

Even small injuries that would be a minor aggravation to most of us, can heal poorly and become infected, causing serious problems for diabetes patients.

Yet, having diabetes doesn’t have to result in amputations, blindness or dialysis, which are the worst-case complications. although not “cured,” many people control their diabetes through proper diet and exercise and proper attention to their feet. Some even thrive without medication.

As a member of the medical community, and in this pre-election season, I call on my colleagues to support funding for better education and awareness. Each year, millions of dollars are allocated to research for improved treatment and even cures. and while we know research is important, we would like to see funds allocated to help diabetics better control their disease to avoid the worse-case scenarios.

Too often, people with diabetes who have lost their health-care insurance or can’t afford health care on their own avoid regular visits to their doctors or are not compliant with medication or preventative care. Proper funding for education, awareness and provision of treatment for those in need are critical steps to reducing the most dire consequences and cost of diabetes.

Dr. DiDomenico is the managing partner at Ankle & Foot Care Centers, a local group of podiatric physicians and surgeons.

AN OBESE ape is seeing the benefits of a crash diet and exercise regime.

Oshine the Bornean orang-utan arr-ived at Monkey World last summer morbidly obese at twice the weight she should have been after living as a pet on sweets and processed food.

but her new diet has helped her lose fat while exercise has boosted her fitness and staff at the sanctuary and tourist attraction near Bovington have been delighted to see her adopt an orphaned orang-utan.

Dr Alison Cronin, director, said: “With Monkey World’s help Oshine has turned her life around.

“When she arrived at the rescue centre she was morbidly obese and ran the risk of developing heart disease, blood clots, high blood pressure and diabetes.

“We have been quite strict with her diet and have removed all sweets and processed foods that she used to get in addition to her normal diet and it has worked.”

Oshine weighed 100kg when she arrived but the team at the sanctuary have helped the 14-year-old lose 20kg by changing her food and giving her a 20m climbing fame to scale and exercise on.

Monkey World is home to Europe’s orang-utan crèche where orphaned babies are sent to grow up with others of their own kind.

Oshine has adopted an orphaned baby orang-utan named Silvestre and it is hoped that they will be integrated in with the other orang-utans soon. Silvestre is a male Sumatran orang-utan and was born in 2009 at Santillana Zoo in Spain.

his mother abandoned him so keepers at the zoo cared for him for the first 11 months of his life and in December last year he was brought to Monkey World to join the orang-utan crèche. Dr Cronin added: “Oshine still has a long way to go and needs to lose another 20-30 kg before we will be happy with her fitness and health.

“I hope that by the end of this year Oshine will have lost enough weight that we can introduce her to one of our adult groups of orang-utans where she will be able to have her own baby but until she loses more weight it would not be healthy for her.”

Oshine’s diet includes fruit and vegetables, eggs, chicken, breakfast cereal, rice and couscous.

Her rescue and rehabilitation will be featured in a new series of Monkey Life due to be launched on the Animal Planet television channel starting on August 29th.

as members of the European Endangered Species Breeding Programme for orang-utans Monkey World breeds the apes and offers a home to any babies born in European zoos that are orphaned.

What are good alternatives to Avandia for treating type II Diabetes?

Written on July 29th, 2011 by larryno shouts

I''ve been on Avandia for 3 years, and take metformin as well. Now today, news stories show significantly increased heart attack risk with Avandia, and since heart disease runs in my family, I'd rather not chance it. plus, Avandia makes it really hard to keep weight down, in my experience.

I stopped avandia several yrs ago after i found out it caused fluid retention . I am glad I did. The statistics on this med sound just horrible .

Doctor : I have some good news and some bad news "
Family member of a patient with diabetes " Tell me please "
Doctor "Your relative's blood sugar is great but he has had a massive heart attack and is dead "

Your doctor can help you decide what to do to replace the avandia.
Good luck.

Ask your doctor about ACTOS it is a TZD that works on a different gene receptor. Ask him about the "Proactive" study. (Avandia's main competitor) Ask if the heart problem is a class effect. I do not beleive that it is. but ask your doctor what he recommends. Actos is Pioglitazone hydrochloride.

My doctor just increased my Metformin to three a day. In other words with each meal. but I am also on insulin. but since the warning on Avandia came out I will stay away from that drug. we who have Diabetes do not need unwanted problems from drugs.

Culture shift needed to fight obesity

Written on July 19th, 2011 by larryno shouts

Dietary guidelines for children younger than 2?

If adults don’t understand the food pyramid turned dinner plate graphic, why would more guidelines help? And to what end?

So many questions arise when we as a nation talk about healthy eating and obesity.

Admittedly, the facts raise concerns: 20 percent of children are overweight before they start school, twice the number recorded in the 1980s. And 10 percent of those younger than 2 are too heavy.

Obesity leads to health problems such as diabetes and heart disease, both of which are showing up in younger and younger people, even teens. Experts suggest early weight predicts later obesity.

Recent recommendations by the Institute of Medicine, an arm of the National Academy of Sciences, suggest the problem is big enough that the government should establish dietary guidelines for the youngest Americans and regulations for day-care providers.

That’s when we have to wonder: how much is too much? when does such a focus on weight create further body-image issues, particularly for young girls?

Pediatricians and many nonprofit agencies offer guidance to parents already. they, too, express concern on a case-by-case basis, addressing issues where they need addressing. Associations of day-care providers include best practices and ongoing training for those who seek it. Adding on rules to already burdened small businesses seems like a step too far.

We all care about our youths. but sometimes our government concern can appear overreaching.

Our nation’s obesity and health problems are not limited to the under-2 set, preschoolers or even older youths. It’s a national crisis that relies on personal responsibility. Until we change our culture of poor eating and not exercising, government rules and standards will only create government bloat.

What medications, if abruptly discontinued, would result in death?

Written on June 27th, 2011 by larryno shouts

I'm working on a crime story where someone murders a crotchety geriatric by switching out their pills. I'd prefer a drug for a common illness (eg. heart disease or diabetes). Ideally, the medication would not be unusual in appearance or taste.

Can swollen ankles be treated

Diuretic medicine increase the quantity of fluid removed by your kidneys and this may also help to do away with any extra fluid from the body. This removes the build up of fluid from the tissues in your ankles.

If your ankle swelling is due to taking calcium channel blockers, reducing the dose of your drugs will usually help. Or, if your blood pressure is not totally managed, your doctor might prescribe you a diuretic to assist decrease your blood pressure further and take away the excess fluid.
