Researchers at Bangor University are due to investigate a gene which has not yet been studied. It is hoped that the gene (Pdx2) could play a role in the treatment of diabetes. The research team, led by Dr John Mulley, want to find out more about how the gene works and how to turn it on, and ascertain whether it could have an application in the treatment of type 2 diabetes.
The study is being funded by the charity Diabetes UK, which has made 960,000 available for research projects across Wales and awarded a 14,500 grant to Dr John Mulley at Bangor University. Diabetes is becoming increasingly prevalent, which means that research on treatments is more important than ever.
In the past, researchers have established that the Pdx1 gene is involved in making insulin-producing cells in the human body. Dr Mulley hopes to locate new genetic pathways for insulin regulation or the production of insulin-producing cells. These could then be modified for use in humans and for treating diabetes in the future.
Dr Victoria King, Head of Research at Diabetes UK, has commented on the importance of finding new treatments, stating that “once the insulin-producing beta cells have been destroyed in diabetes they have a limited, or almost non-existent, capacity to regenerate.” She said that researchers face the challenge of working out how “diverse organisms manage to regenerate insulin-producing cells, or regulate their insulin and glucose levels.” This information could then be harnessed to develop new treatments for diabetes.
People develop type 2 diabetes either when the body can’t make enough insulin, or when the insulin that is produced doesn’t work correctly, causing glucose to accumulate in the blood. As many as 90% of diabetes sufferers have the type 2 variety, and, in most cases, this is linked to being overweight. People are known to have diabetes for up to 10 years without being diagnosed. Because of this, around half of diabetes sufferers face complications by the time a diagnosis is made.

Coffee is known for a lot of things. It is one of the most addictive drinks in the world and can be drunk in various ways with different blends to boot. One thing about it is that it has added benefits but there are also risk factors involved. But, the benefits outweigh the disadvantages. Here are some of them.
When in pain, simply drink a cup. It lowers the pain up to 48 percent which is why most people who are physically exhausted and battered the entire day are most likely would enjoy a cup of it to help them keep the pain at bay.
It is rich in antioxidants. Antioxidants prevent free radicals from destroying the cells of the body making us look younger. The reason why it tastes bitter is because of the antioxidants.
And since it is a good pain reliever, it also has anti-inflammatory properties which calms down headaches and provides comfort for those who are under asthma attack.
Remember that groggy feeling you feel early in the morning? Just down a cup of the drink and you feel all better which is why scientists have found out that it boosts your mood.
We already know that it boosts our concentration and attention span but what you do not know is that it will last for up to 8 hours which makes up the entire time you are at the office working.
It has recently been discovered to prevent tooth decay or dental cavities. A substance called trigonelline which gives the coffee its delightful aroma has antibacterial properties which prevent bacteria from running rampant inside your mouth and also has an anti-adhesive ability to protect your teeth from cavities.
Coffee is also known to lower the risk of deadly diseases known to man. These diseases include Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and even diabetes which is why drinking coffee has never been this good.
